Aspose Pdf Form Fields

Active6 years, 3 months ago

I have a few PDFs from various customers/vendors. My goal is that I am building a web app where a potential customer fills out a single form of data and then can generate all of the PDF's to print and sign.

Pdf

The PDF's have fields in them that in adobe reader you can click and type in the data. However, this is sensitive financial data, and the PDF won't let you save to your desktop. There is actually a warning in adobe reader when you open the pdf and it prevents you from saving a completed form. I don't care about this feature. My users can save it if they want to take the risk if it becomes opened up when I generate the completed pdf myself.

When rendering to PDF some drop-down form fields with long text was not wrapped when rendering to PDF, this can cause part of the content to be truncated. Starting with this version of Aspose.Words such form fields are exported to PDF with lines wrapped.

The problem is that I need to generate these pdfs with my data injected into them without altering the style. I want to avoid manually building them, but I will if I have to. How can I generate the exact PDF format they gave me with the data filled in?

You could have a look at iTextSharp and the PdfStamper class - it allows you to load up an existing PDF, 'stamp' data into the fields and then flatten out the PDF which can be sent to the user:

Note that iTextSharp is paid for for commerical products - but there may well be other open sources librarires that can do this.

You may try Aspose.Pdf for .NET to achieve your goal. You can fill the form fields using this component. If you do not want to allow the users to edit this data once it is filled in the PDF, you may flatten the fields as well. This will not change the existing layout of your PDF. The API is very simple along with complete documentation and support.

I have a pdf document with many form fields on it. I need to see the names of the form fields. Can I do this with Adobe Reader? Perhaps a third party tool.?

It's likely you'll find a user-friendly application to do this for you, but this is how I achieve it with a little VBScript..

  1. Download and Install ABCpdf fromwebSupergoo, available here..

  2. Copy the following script into atext file and save it with a '.vbs'file extension.

  3. Place a copy of your PDF file intothe same folder as the script, namingit 'myForm.pdf'.

  4. Double-click the script file to run.

After the script finishes you should find another PDF document named 'output.pdf' appears in the same folder, with all the field names overlayed on top of the fields.

I appreciate this question is a bit old but in case anyone else comes across it the PDF Toolkit will allow you to do this very simply with a command that looks like this (where the PDF you want the form fields from is called docsOfInterest.pdf:

As far as I know you can't do it with Acrobat Reader. You can use their PDF writer program (Currently Acrobat XI) to do it, but it's fairly pricey.

I had to do the same thing for just a few documents. I just downloaded the trial version of deskPDF Studio X. From the menu, going to Forms > Modify Form Layout lets you see the name of the fields.

There is a technical article on Aspose.com which explains how to identify form field names for PDFs. According to this article, you can achieve this by using the Java code on the page.

Apparently there's an online live demo of a package called AspPDF, that lets you do just that. You can find a direct link here.
